From Roadside Warung to Cultural Landmark
Made’s Warung began like many great stories do, with good food, family, and a lot of heart. In the late 1960s, Kuta was still a quiet fishing village. Locals would gather at a modest roadside stall run by Made’s grandmother, mother, and sisters. There, they shared unfiltered coffee, rice cakes, gossip, and laughter.
As the first waves of travellers arrived in Bali in the ‘70s—hippies, surfers, and curious wanderers—they brought new tastes and ideas. Ibu Made, the eldest daughter, welcomed them with warmth and curiosity, gently evolving the menu to include jaffles, pancakes, fruit salads, sushi, and more, without ever losing the essence of a true warung.
Over the years, the warung grew—four renovations in Kuta, Berawa a new flagship in Seminyak, and eventually locations at Bali’s airport, in Jakarta, and even Amsterdam. Through every change, Made’s remained grounded in its philosophy: communal dining, no pretence, and a space where strangers become friends.
Whether you’re tucking into nasi campur in Seminyak or grabbing sambal for your flight, you’re part of something that started with a family, a village, and a love of sharing meals.

Since 1969:
A Story of Food, Culture & Community
A Family Warung That Became a Balinese Icon
Made's Warung began in the 1960s as a humble roadside stall in Kuta, a sleepy fishing village at the time. It was run by Made's grandmother, mother, and daughters, serving locals unfiltered coffee, rice cakes, and fried snacks, along with a healthy side of village gossip.
As the first waves of travellers arrived in Bali during the late 60s and 70s—surfers, hippies, and wanderers—Kuta began to change. Visitors wanted more than traditional fare, and Ibu Made, the eldest daughter, began adapting the warung to welcome them. While the concept and spirit of a warung remained unchanged, the menu began to grow.
From Gado-Gado to Sushi: A Menu That Mirrors the Island
The warung became a meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Jaffles were introduced by Australian surfers, Japanese guests taught Made to make sushi and sashimi, and pancakes—still a bestseller—joined the mix. Little by little, Made’s became known as a must-visit Bali icon, where everyone came to eat, chat, and people-watch.
Expanding in Kuta, Growing with Bali
As Kuta boomed, the original warung was renovated four times, each update keeping the welcoming spirit of shared tables and communal dining. In the 1970s, telling someone you ran a “warung” raised eyebrows. But by the 1990s, even multinational companies were using the term, and Made’s Warung helped lead the way.
A New Home in Seminyak, and Recognition to Match
In 1995, it was time to expand again. Construction began in Seminyak, and by mid-1996 the new Made’s Warung opened its doors. It was an instant success. In 1997, the Governor of Bali awarded Made’s Warung the title of Best Restaurant in Bali.
The Seminyak venue grew to include shops, a performance space for Balinese dance and live music, and a beautiful central bar inspired by Raffles Singapore, now famous for its arak madu. A true village within a village, the warung now welcomed guests from all walks of life.
Made's Warung Today: Keeping the Spirit Alive
In 2010, the Seminyak location expanded again to accommodate even more guests and local businesses. And in 2015, the next chapter began: Made’s Warung opened at the Bali Wake Park in Benoa, serving both guests at the park and preparing food for the new airport outlets. At Ngurah Rai International Airport, travellers can now enjoy Made’s favourites like nasi goreng, mie goreng, nasi campur, sambals, and brownies before take-off.
A takeaway option (bungkus) lets guests bring the flavours of Bali with them on board. Today, Made’s Warung also serves Jakarta and even Amsterdam—where Ibu Made’s husband Peter was born—bringing a taste of Bali to the world. From Our Family to Yours We’re proud to continue the tradition of home-style cooking, shared tables, and warm service, with the next generation ready to carry the torch. Selamat makan. Made Masih.
